Pearl was originally cast as a Puerto Rican Supergirl, but while I was living in Uganda I watched two young Ugandan girls watching a cartoon about a white princess and how they desired to be like her. I wondered why there were no African role models so I created Pearl!
Pearl Essuubi, the hope of Uganda was created in an effort to instill hope to young Ugandan girls. Her story is a sad one at the onset but quickly becomes a beacon of hope, encouraging young African girls to always strive to be the best at whatever they choose to do, in spite of the hardships of life. Pearl never knew her parents, she was raised by her maternal grandmother in abject poverty, as many of the people in her village were also very poor. Pearl never knew her parents; her mother died giving birth to her and her father left her with her maternal grandmother and left, never to return again.
